Born from a moment that changed everything, my story began on what should have been a pleasant boat ride. In seconds, a normal day turned into a tragedy. My hat blew overboard—something that had happened countless times over the years. We were both experienced boaters with more than 40 years on the water, and retrieving something that fell in was almost routine.

But on this day, I lost my friend.

That loss opened my eyes to how quickly the water can take control—and how unprepared even seasoned boaters truly are. The wicked mix of water, waves, and wind took over faster than either of us could react. By the grace of God, I am here today to tell this story. I share it so no one else has to live with what I experienced.

LISTEN CLOSELY: None of us are inflatable. Let go of the idea that being a strong swimmer or being “experienced” makes you safe. The water does not care about confidence, ego, or history. It only takes a moment.

This site exists to change that.

It took me months before getting to the point of being able to share my story. As you’ll see in the video, it will stay with me for a very long time. My hope is that stories impact people to pay attention and change their protocols for swimming in open water, with the goal of saving lifes.
